Berea Utilizes Sewer District Grant to Repair Infrastructure, Potentially Deactivating Pump Station

Berea City Council has recently approved legislation to accept a $729,000 grant from the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District (NEORSD) to help fund sewer rehabilitation work in 2025. The grant, part of the 2025 Member Community Infrastructure Program (MCIP), will be used for sewer improvements in the Jacqueline Drive, Meadow Drive, and Sprague Road area. City officials noted that while there had been some flooding issues in the past, NEORSD identified inflow and infiltration as a problem in the designated area, meaning storm water was entering the sanitary sewer system.

Approximately 14 to 15 streets’ pipes will be relined as part of the project, potentially leading to the decommissioning of the pump station on Fair Street. Public Service Director/City Engineer Tony Armagno expects minimal disruption during the project, with most of the work taking place underground. He assured council members that the project is focused on sewer rehabilitation, so there will be very little excavation or disturbance of pavement.

The grant money will be available starting Jan. 1 and will cover design and construction costs for the sewer rehabilitation work. Officials anticipate that the project will address the identified issues in the Jacqueline/Meadow/Sprague area and contribute to the overall improvement of the city’s sewer system. This development is seen as a positive step towards enhancing the infrastructure and ensuring the efficient functioning of the sewer system in Berea.
