Ohio Governor signed a new law in July that will change how statewide ballot measures are numbered. Under the new system, the next statewide ballot measure in Ohio will be known as Issue 2, with subsequent measures being numbered accordingly. Once the state reaches its 501st ballot measure, the numbering system will restart back to Issue 1.
The purpose of the new law is to cut down on voter confusion, as there have been instances where Ohio voters were faced with multiple ballot measures all labeled as Issue 1 within a short span of time. This led to jumbled search engine results and conflicts with political signage.
The bill was passed unanimously in the Ohio House, with Representative Mathews stating that the change will provide voters with more clarity at the ballot box and allow each ballot issue to receive the unique and thoughtful debate it deserves.
The new numbering system will come into effect for the next statewide ballot measure, potentially in May 2025. This change is aimed at streamlining the voting process and preventing confusion for Ohio voters.
