Nation Remembers Pearl Harbor on 83rd Anniversary
COLUMBUS, Ohio — On December 7, America observes National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, a solemn occasion dedicated to honoring the 2,403 service members and civilians who lost their lives during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941.
This year, President Joe Biden has called on Americans to display the flag of the United States at half-staff in recognition of those who sacrificed their lives in defense of the nation. Governor Mike DeWine has also directed that all Ohio state flags be flown at half-staff on public buildings and grounds from midnight to midnight on December 7, in alignment with the national observance.
In a statement from the White House, President Biden emphasized the valor of the service members who bravely responded to the unprovoked assault. “We recognize the absolute courage of the service members who, in the wake of this painful and unprovoked attack, stood up to defend democracy and counter fascism abroad during World War II,” the statement read.
The White House release further urged Americans to remember the patriots whose lives were tragically cut short on that fateful day and to honor all service members who dedicated their lives to the cause of liberty in the years to come. "May we all recommit to fulfilling the future they fought for — one grounded in freedom, democracy, equality, and opportunity for all," the statement concluded.
As the nation reflects on the significance of this day, it serves as a reminder of the resilience and dedication of those who fought for the principles that define the United States.
