Ohio State Men’s Soccer Advances to NCAA College Cup
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State University’s men’s soccer team achieved a historic milestone by defeating Wake Forest 3-0 in the 2024 NCAA Tournament Quarterfinals, earning a spot in the NCAA College Cup for only the second time in program history. The match took place at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium, with the Buckeyes finishing their season at an impressive 16-1-4.
The top-seeded Buckeyes capitalized on a penalty opportunity in the first half with a successful kick from Michael Adedokun, set up by a foul drawn by former Wake Forest player David Wrona. Just minutes into the second half, Wrona assisted freshman David Ajagbe, who scored Ohio State’s second goal, increasing their lead to 2-0. Adedokun sealed the victory with a third goal in the 59th minute, marking a standout performance with two goals on the night.
The Buckeyes exhibited dominant gameplay, finishing their home season undefeated at 10-0-4. Under head coach Brian Maisonneuve, who earned his 50th career win with this victory, the team has demonstrated its formidable defense, allowing just two goals in five postseason matches, including three shutouts.
Looking ahead, Ohio State will compete against either No. 13 SMU or No. 12 Marshall in the NCAA College Cup next Friday in Cary, North Carolina. Their remarkable season has been marked by a slew of impressive individual performances, notably from Adedokun, who leads the team with 17 points, and keeper Max Trejo, boasting a record-breaking goals against average of 0.49.
With a winning percentage of .857 and the most goals scored in a season at 51, the Buckeyes have significantly improved from last year’s record, positioning themselves as a formidable contender in collegiate soccer. #GoBucks
