Ohio Bobcats Name Brian Smith Interim Head Coach Ahead of StaffDNA Cure Bowl
ATHENS, Ohio – Following the departure of Tim Albin, the Ohio University Director of Athletics, Julie Cromer, has appointed associate head coach and offensive coordinator Brian Smith as the interim head coach for the Bobcats’ upcoming StaffDNA Cure Bowl.
Cromer expressed gratitude for Albin’s nearly two-decade tenure at Ohio, emphasizing the solid foundation of the program built during his time, notably achieving a Mid-American Conference (MAC) championship last weekend. “We wish him and his family all the best at their next stop,” she said.
As Cromer undertakes the search for a new head coach, she noted the high interest from experienced candidates eager to join a program with a rich history and strong fan support, recognizing the institution’s commitment to excellence.
Brian Smith’s offensive strategies this season have yielded significant success, marking the Bobcats at the top of multiple MAC statistical categories, including total yards per game. In the recent MAC Championship, his offense amassed 467 yards, contributing significantly to a commanding 38-3 victory over Miami. Quarterback Parker Navarro excelled, completing 20-of-27 passes for 235 yards and four touchdowns.
Smith’s coaching tenure has seen the development of 11 All-MAC offensive honorees, contributing to the team’s bowl victories including the Arizona Bowl and the Myrtle Beach Bowl. Meanwhile, defensive coordinator John Hauser continues to lead a robust defense, which allowed just three points in the MAC Championship, showcasing a formidable record.
The Ohio Bobcats will face Jacksonville State in the StaffDNA Cure Bowl on December 20, with the game airing live at noon on ESPN. For further information and tickets, fans can visit OhioBobcats.com/CureBowl2024.
