Browns Stumble Against Steelers, Missing Season Sweep Opportunity
PITTSBURGH, Pa. – In a disappointing effort, the Cleveland Browns fell to the Pittsburgh Steelers 27-14 on Sunday, thwarting their chance for a season sweep for the first time since 1988.
The matchup was intense, with both teams still feeling the tension from their previous clash just 16 days prior. However, the Steelers focused on their own performance, as defensive end Alex Highsmith emphasized their approach was less about revenge and more about establishing their play.
Pittsburgh set the tone early, with T.J. Watt tackling Browns running back Nick Chubb for a loss on the very first play. Highsmith, recently returning from injury, was instrumental, showcasing his defensive prowess, including a key sack on Jameis Winston. The Steelers’ defense stifled Winston, limiting him to 212 yards while forcing two interceptions.
With wide receiver George Pickens sidelined due to a hamstring injury, other Steelers stepped up. Mike Williams, who hadn’t been targeted since Week 10, made notable contributions, catching three passes for 36 yards. Tight end Pat Freiermuth continued to shine with a 20-yard touchdown catch.
Cleveland struggled to respond effectively, missing a crucial fourth-and-1 opportunity when Jerome Ford was stopped, which allowed Pittsburgh to extend their lead with another touchdown connection from Wilson to Freiermuth.
Although the Browns fought back, highlighted by a touchdown from Winston to David Njoku, they couldn’t capitalize on late-game opportunities. A critical fumble during a return attempt by Kadarius Toney finally sealed Cleveland’s fate, as Pittsburgh controlled the game until the clock expired.
The loss keeps the Browns searching for answers while the Steelers continue to build momentum as they eye a playoff push.
