Former MLB Outfielder Merv Rettenmund Passes Away at 81
SAN DIEGO – Merv Rettenmund, a celebrated outfielder who enjoyed a distinguished 13-year Major League Baseball (MLB) career, has passed away at the age of 81 due to terminal cancer. The news of his death on Saturday was confirmed by MLB.com and reported by The San Diego Union-Tribune, which noted Rettenmund had been diagnosed in August.
Born on June 6, 1943, in Flint, Michigan, Rettenmund made his MLB debut with the Baltimore Orioles in 1968 at the age of 24. He was instrumental in the Orioles’ success, contributing to three consecutive American League pennant victories from 1969 to 1971, including a World Series championship in 1970 against the Cincinnati Reds. During that standout season, Rettenmund achieved impressive stats with a .322 batting average, 18 home runs, 58 RBIs, and a .938 OPS.
In December 1973, he joined the Cincinnati Reds, becoming part of the legendary "Big Red Machine." He helped lead the team to another World Series title in 1975, defeating the Boston Red Sox in a thrilling seven-game series. Rettenmund also played for the San Diego Padres and California Angels before retiring in 1980.
Beyond his playing days, Rettenmund transitioned into coaching, serving as a hitting coach for several MLB teams, including the Texas Rangers, Oakland Athletics, San Diego Padres, Atlanta Braves, and Detroit Tigers. Notably, he was part of the Athletics’ coaching staff when they won the World Series in 1989 and was credited with mentoring Hall of Fame outfielder Tony Gwynn.
Reflecting on his life, Rettenmund remained optimistic despite his illness, saying, “It’s been a great ride. Really and truly, I feel really good. I’m not in any pain.” His legacy as a player and coach leaves an indelible mark on the sport of baseball.
