Cleveland Ballet Unveils Exciting New “Nutcracker” for 2024
CLEVELAND, Ohio – This December, the Cleveland Ballet is set to enchant audiences with a refreshed rendition of the beloved holiday classic, “The Nutcracker,” at Playhouse Square’s Connor Palace. Performances will run from December 13-15 and December 19-22, showcasing new choreography, costumes, and scenic designs under the visionary direction of new artistic director Timour Bourtasenkov.
Bourtasenkov, who has a rich history with “The Nutcracker” since he first danced in it at just nine years old, has crafted an innovative interpretation that returns to the ballet’s traditional narrative roots. The story transitions to a Victorian setting where Clara, returning to her original name, embarks on a magical journey to the Land of Sweets. Unlike the past two years where Clara was dubbed “Caroline” and traveled the globe, this version emphasizes a more classic storyline, incorporating a larger cast to enhance the celebratory atmosphere.
The ballet opens with a lively Christmas Eve party, featuring six dancing couples and numerous young dancers from the community. The plot unfolds as Clara receives a Nutcracker doll from Herr Drosselmeyer and soon finds herself in a battle between the Nutcracker and the Mouse King, leading to her enchanting travels.
Dancer Madison Campbell, a Cleveland Ballet member since 2016, shared her enthusiasm for increased participation from young dancers and the beautiful new costumes crafted for the performances. With each character and scene holding unique challenges and opportunities for growth, the production promises to keep audiences marveling at the holiday magic.
Performances start at varying times, with tickets priced between $30 and $131, available at playhousesquare.org. Don’t miss this extraordinary new version of “The Nutcracker” that highlights tradition, community, and festive spirit.
