DeWine to Sign Ohio Parental Notification Bill with Amendments

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine is showing support for the controversial “Parents Bill of Rights” as it makes its way through the legislature during the lame duck session. The bill, also known as House Bill 8, would require schools to notify parents about sexuality content in the curriculum and allow them to opt their child out of it. Additionally, it would mandate school personnel to report any changes in a student’s mental or physical health.

DeWine has expressed interest in making changes to the bill to ensure that he can sign it into law. One potential addition could be a provision allowing students to leave for religious classes off-campus during the school day. LBGTQ advocates have criticized the bill, likening it to Florida’s “don’t say gay” law, and warning that it could result in school employees outing kids to their parents.

Last year, DeWine vetoed a bill banning gender transition treatment for minors, but the legislature quickly overrode his veto. More recently, he signed a bill requiring individuals in educational institutions to use facilities that align with the gender they were assigned at birth.

DeWine made these comments after attending the groundbreaking of a new $2 billion terminal at John Glenn International Airport in Columbus, which is slated to be completed in 2029. These developments indicate the ongoing debate around parental rights, LGBTQ rights, and education policy in Ohio.
