Weather Alert: Ashtabula County Braces for More Snow
CLEVELAND, Ohio — Following a major snowstorm that left Ashtabula County buried under more than five feet of snow last week, residents are facing the possibility of more winter weather starting Wednesday. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a winter storm watch for the lakeshore regions as a new round of lake-effect snow is predicted to take hold.
Forecasters warn that snow accumulation could begin in the afternoon, with gusty winds reaching up to 35 mph. By Friday morning, the area could see between 6 to 12 inches of fresh snow, particularly impacting locations north of Interstate 90 along the shoreline of Lake Erie. The potential for challenging travel conditions is high, with difficult commutes expected on Wednesday evening and Thursday morning.
Last week’s storm was particularly severe, with Saybrook Township receiving a staggering 63.2 inches of snow, while Geneva recorded 50.5 inches. Other notable totals from nearby areas include Madison with 45 inches, Concord Township with 34.1 inches, Mentor at 29.2 inches, and Willoughby with 24 inches. In Cuyahoga County, Euclid saw 9 inches of snow while Mayfield received 5 inches.
The NWS attributes the recent snow events to above-normal water temperatures on Lake Erie combined with cold air, ample low-level moisture, and the lake’s fetching conditions, which created perfect circumstances for intense lake-effect snow. During parts of last week’s storm, snowfall rates reached 1 to 3 inches per hour. As Ashtabula County prepares for more snow, residents are advised to stay updated on weather forecasts and prepare for potentially hazardous conditions.
