Medina Land Acquisition to Enhance Frontage at Ray Mellert Park

Medina Expands Ray Mellert Park with Generous Donation

MEDINA, Ohio – In a significant enhancement to Ray Mellert Park, the Medina City Council has approved the acceptance of a $20,500 donation from the Tom and Jill Lincoln Foundation, enabling the expansion of the park’s Foundry Street frontage. The legislation not only facilitates the donation but also authorizes Mayor Dennis Hanwell to enter into a purchase agreement for the property located at 334 Foundry Street, currently part of the estate of Leila Hodges.

Parks and Recreation Director Jansen Wehrley commented on the generous gift, indicating that it will be used to demolish an existing house and restore the land for park use. "The emergency clause was necessary to expedite the property’s transfer out of probate court," he explained. "We thank the foundation for their consideration, which allows us to enhance the park’s valuable space."

In addition to approving the donation, the council also confirmed five mayoral appointments to various boards and committees for the coming year. Members appointed include Ariel Bly, Robert Mueller, and Rick Kirby to the Emerging Technologies Advisory Committee, Chris Jackson to the Board of Building Code Appeals, and Bert Humpal to the Board of Zoning Appeals.

During the meeting, Mayor Hanwell updated residents on leaf collection efforts, informing them that service department workers would resume leaf collection this week after a brief diversion to manage snow and salt duties. "We’re optimistic about the weather and will continue leaf collection as needed," Hanwell stated.

This development reflects Medina’s ongoing commitment to enriching community spaces and maintaining efficient city services, supported by generous local organizations.
