Ohio sports betting reaches record $6 billion in wagers, surpassing college football playoff excitement

Ohioans have been enjoying the ability to place sports bets legally for almost two years now, with over $6 billion placed in bets in 2024 alone. With the College Football Playoff approaching, experts anticipate even more money being wagered on sports events.

Dr. Kevin Willardsen, an Associate Professor of Economics at Wright State University, highlights that sports betting combines two things people enjoy: watching sports and betting with friends. Around one-third of the sports bets in Ohio in 2024 were placed on football games, particularly in the college ranks.

The upcoming 12-team college football playoff is expected to attract even more betting activity. Willardsen notes that as more opportunities arise for people to bet on different outcomes, the industry continues to grow. However, he emphasizes that sports betting is a zero-sum game, with winners and losers canceling each other out in the economy.

Despite this, the state of Ohio has benefitted greatly from sports gambling, earning over $730 million in tax revenue in 2024 alone. Willardsen explains that the state benefits the most from the industry because they tax every bet.

As the College Football Playoffs approach, betting websites are ramping up their offerings, but both organizations and the state of Ohio advise bettors to gamble responsibly. Willardsen reminds everyone that while the house may always win, in this case, the house is the state benefiting from sports gambling.
