A government accountability group, the Foundation for Accountability and Civic Trust (FACT), has filed a complaint against Sen. Sherrod Brown to the Federal Election Commission, alleging multiple campaign finance violations during the 2024 election cycle. The complaint accuses Brown of unlawfully soliciting excessive campaign contributions, particularly for his primary election campaign after the primary election occurred.
Despite running unopposed in the Democratic primary, Brown reportedly had a significant cash surplus with no primary campaign debts, leading to suspicions about the legitimacy of the donations received. The complaint also alleges that contributions to the Ohio Democratic Party were improperly earmarked or designated for spending on behalf of Brown in the general election.
FACT called for appropriate sanctions against Brown and his campaign agents, including civil penalties, to deter future violations. The Brown campaign did not respond to requests for comment on the allegations.
With Ohio being a key swing state that has trended Republican in recent elections, Brown’s re-election bid against Trump-backed candidate Bernie Moreno is expected to be closely watched. Republicans are aiming to flip a net of two seats to retake control of the Senate in the November elections, adding further significance to the outcome of the Ohio Senate race.
As one of the most liberal Democrats in the Senate and having served three terms, Brown’s campaign finance practices are under scrutiny as the FEC investigates the allegations put forth by FACT.
