The E.W. Scripps School of Journalism and the Patton College of Education are teaming up to host the Scripps National Spelling Bee Regional Competition on the Ohio University campus on March 1. This partnership marks the first time journalism and education have worked together to host the regional event in Athens. The bee is open to elementary and middle school students across the region, providing them with an opportunity to showcase their spelling skills and passion for competition.
The collaboration between the two colleges came about after learning that there was no regional partner for the 2025 event. Both colleges recognized the value of supporting young students in the region and helping them discover their talent for spelling. The event will be held at the Schoonover Center on campus, with journalism providing emcees, judges, and a record keeper, while education organizes a group of undergraduate teacher candidates to serve as literacy ambassadors.
The regional event aims to welcome spellers and their families to campus, expose them to college life, and inspire them to consider future possibilities. The winner of the southeast Ohio regional competition will have the opportunity to compete in the national event in Washington D.C. The collaboration between journalism and education highlights the importance of supporting community initiatives and fostering the talent of young students in the region.
The event is open to the public and will start at 9 a.m. at the Schoonover Center Auditorium. The colleges hope to fill the auditorium with supporters cheering on the young spellers as they compete.
