The University of Akron has formed a partnership with the Cleveland Browns to provide students with valuable experience in the professional sports industry. Through a $1.36 million investment over four years, the university has expanded internship and educational opportunities for students. The partnership began last fall with volunteer opportunities, and has since grown to include three new for-credit courses: Materials Science of Football, Sport Consulting Project, and Business of the Browns.
In the Materials Science of Football class, students will explore the science behind materials used in football, including ceramics, metals, plastics, and composites. The course will also cover the history of materials in the game and features examples from the Cleveland Browns. The Sport Consulting Project allows students to work on team dynamics and solve complex challenges specific to sports organizations. Students will collaborate with the Global Markets Program to expand the Browns’ brand internationally.
The Business of the Browns course covers important topics for the organization, such as technological advancements, athlete branding, performance analysis metrics, fan engagement strategies, and the impact of social media on sports. Browns staff will visit throughout the semester to provide insights into the industry.
This partnership offers University of Akron students a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience and valuable knowledge in the sports industry. For more Akron news, readers can sign up for cleveland.com’s Rubber City Update newsletter.
