Portrait of an Educator Presented by Medina City Schools

Medina City School officials recently introduced Portrait of an Educator, a new initiative that outlines the characteristics and expectations the district has for its employees. This initiative is meant to align with the existing Portrait of a Bee initiative, which focuses on students. The development of Portrait of an Educator began in the 2022-23 school year, with input from district administrators and staff. The team identified six competencies that make up a Portrait of an Educator: advocates, flexible, critical thinkers, relationship builders, resilient, and reflective.

Human Resource Director Jim Shields emphasized the importance of having the right people in place to develop students. The team worked with teacher leaders and staff at all levels to develop these competencies, which will be used in interview questions for new employees, as well as in employee evaluations and district awards. Board President Andrew West praised the collaborative process that involved staff input.

Superintendent Aaron Sable highlighted the need to attract a diverse range of employees, especially as fewer people are enrolling in education programs. The district aims to ensure that its employees possess the competencies outlined in Portrait of an Educator to effectively work with students. Overall, this initiative marks the beginning of a comprehensive effort to define the expectations for all employees in the district.
