Ohio Republicans join effort to make a new U.S. constitutional convention a reality

A nationwide effort, including in Ohio, is underway to hold a second constitutional convention to rein in the power of the federal government, 238 years after the Founding Fathers convened to create the U.S. Constitution. 19 state legislatures have passed resolutions calling for such a convention, with 15 more states considering similar legislation. The aim is to pass amendments focused on limiting government waste and overreach. The initiative is largely backed by conservatives who believe it is necessary to make changes to the political structure. However, some Democrats express concerns that a convention could lead to a range of constitutional rewrites on contentious issues, particularly considering the current political climate.

The Convention of the States initiative, founded by conservative attorneys Michael Farris and Mark Meckler, aims to push for amendments on three topics: term limits for federal officials, fiscal restraints on the federal government, and limiting the power of the federal government. While some opponents argue that such a convention could lead to harmful changes to the Constitution, supporters believe it could result in amendments that have broad support and aim to improve government efficiency and effectiveness.

While efforts are underway in Ohio, progress has been slow, with challenges in gaining the needed Republican support in the legislature to pass related resolutions. Questions remain about what amendments might be proposed and how long it could take to garner the necessary support from 34 states to convene a constitutional convention. Opposition from some Democrats and advocacy groups adds further complexity to the debate surrounding the potential for major constitutional revisions.
