Ohio Democratic Party Focuses on Voter Engagement Ahead of 2026 Elections

COLUMBUS, Ohio (April 25, 2025) — Unlike the grassroots protests erupting across Ohio in response to political climates since President Trump’s term began, the Ohio Democratic Party remains unengaged in these events. Instead, the party is channeling its efforts into voter registration and supporting candidates for the upcoming 2026 elections.
Chair Liz Walters emphasized that while many protests reflect Democratic ideals, the party is not involved in organizing them. “We can’t do everything, so we prioritize our responsibilities to candidates and address critical issues that might go unnoticed,” she stated.
One such focus is ensuring Ohioans at risk of being removed from voter rolls can recertify their registrations. The party is organizing phone banks to aid these voters, aiming to strengthen participation in the electoral process. Walters noted ongoing town halls, including a significant event featuring Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, designed to engage and mobilize community members ahead of local elections.
Acknowledging the frustration and anxiety among Democrats in response to the Republican majority in Ohio, Walters expressed the importance of guiding individuals to find focused activism that empowers them. “We aim to connect people with activities that maximize their impact,” she said.
In contrast, Ohio Republican Party Chair Alex Triantifilou criticized the Democratic leadership for promoting protests while avoiding accountability. He argued that demoralization within the party results from disconnected policies.
As the national movement 50501 prepares for another day of protest on May 1, the Ohio Democratic Party stands firm in its strategy, prioritizing voter engagement and candidate support as it readies for a crucial electoral cycle.
