Ohio Universities Unite in Support of Academic Freedom
COLUMBUS, Ohio — In a significant statement of solidarity, ten Ohio colleges and universities have joined nearly 500 institutions nationwide by signing "A Call for Constructive Engagement," a letter opposing government overreach in higher education. This initiative, led by the American Association of Colleges and Universities, aims to safeguard academic freedom and free speech.
Among the signatories are Ohio Wesleyan University, Oberlin College, Otterbein University, Muskingum University, Capital University, Kenyon College, The College of Wooster, University of Dayton, Heidelberg University, and Denison University. Ohio Wesleyan President Matt vandenBerg expressed that signing was an "easy decision," emphasizing the transformative power of higher education.
The letter articulates a commitment to constructive reform while denouncing undue government intrusion in campus life, particularly in light of recent executive orders from the Trump administration. These orders target diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, with President Trump suggesting potential funding cuts for non-compliant institutions.
Students at Ohio Wesleyan welcomed their school’s participation in the initiative. Freshman Jackson Williams expressed pride in being part of a community that values academic freedom, while fellow student Joy Jbadebeo described the moment as "powerful."
Despite the overwhelming support from private institutions, no public universities in Ohio have signed the letter. This divide became evident when The Ohio State University faced criticism after President Ted Carter indicated compliance with federal mandates to terminate DEI programs. Students voiced concerns over the diminishing support systems within their university.
As the landscape of higher education continues to evolve amid political pressures, these Ohio institutions are standing firm in their commitment to preserving core academic values.
