Lyndhurst City Council Rejects Medical and Recreational Marijuana Dispensaries

Lyndhurst City Council Bans Recreational and Medical Marijuana Dispensaries

LYNDHURST, Ohio — In a decisive move, the Lyndhurst City Council unanimously voted on May 19 to prohibit both adult-use recreational and medical marijuana dispensaries within the city limits. This decision came after ongoing discussions and reflects the council’s sense of uncertainty surrounding the state’s evolving marijuana legislation.

Vice Mayor David Frey cited the need for clarity in Ohio’s marijuana regulations, which currently include Senate Bill 56 — still under consideration and intended to consolidate medical and adult-use laws. "The state of Ohio is not really firmly committed to anything," Frey stated, emphasizing that the council felt obliged to take independent action due to the lack of movement at the state level.

While some nearby communities, like South Euclid, have embraced dispensaries, others have opted for moratoriums or have prohibited them, indicating a mixed approach in the region. Mayfield Heights continues to deliberate on regulations, while Richmond Heights may decide on similar legislation soon.

Council members noted a lack of public interest regarding the establishment of dispensaries in Lyndhurst. Frey remarked that there hadn’t been a significant push from residents for such businesses, and previous six-month moratoriums highlighted the community’s cautious stance. Mayor Patrick Ward echoed this sentiment, suggesting that neighboring cities that accepted dispensaries had not seen the anticipated economic benefits.

In response to inquiries about potential dispensary interest in Lyndhurst, Ward mentioned that while there were some preliminary inquiries, "the interest was not too high." With this ban, Lyndhurst leaders are ensuring that their community aligns with its values amid ongoing statewide discussions about marijuana legislation.
