Gabrielle Union Shares Her First Major Purchase and the Regret That Followed

Gabrielle Union Reflects on Career Choices and Personal Growth at American Black Film Festival

At the American Black Film Festival in Miami on June 12, actress Gabrielle Union candidly shared her regrets about her first major purchase after finding success in Hollywood. Speaking on a panel titled “Sisterhood & Savings,” moderated by Kelley L. Carter, Union described her decision to buy a black Mazda Miata with leather seats, a choice she now considers "stupid."

“I thought I’d made it when I bought a Mazda,” she recalled, but her father had advised against buying a new car due to its rapid depreciation. Union humorously reflected on the discomfort of scorching herself on hot leather seats in Los Angeles, acknowledging that the car lost value the moment she drove it off the lot.

The panel offered a deeper insight into Union’s career, which skyrocketed in the late ’90s with hits like Bring It On and Love & Basketball. Interestingly, Union also touched upon her portrayal of Isis in Bring It On, expressing her regret over the restraint she showed in depicting the character.

“I would have allowed her her full humanity,” she stated, recognizing that she had subdued her character’s anger in favor of respectability. Reflecting on this decision, Union observed, “I muzzled her… and I was doing that to myself too.” This acknowledgment highlights Union’s growth as an artist and her evolving understanding of the importance of expressing genuine emotions.

As Union continues to inspire both on and off-screen, her revelations at the festival provide a poignant reminder of the complexities of identity and representation in Hollywood.
